Ornamental shrimp make great additions to many saltwater aquaria. In addition to being attractive (most are), those shrimp that are symbiotic make for fascinating displays. Many an aquarist has designed a nano tank around such a shrimp, although they also make fantastic additions to an invertebrate or reef tank. Symbiotic shrimp are amongst the most interesting species in the hobby—some aquarists even prefer them to the popular clownfish-anemone relationship (no offence, Nemo).

In this issue of Blue Zoo News, we have shed some light on the utility and appropriateness of certain species of rabbitfishes for marine aquarists interested in a herbivorous fishes for biological control of algae. While the White Spotted Rabbitfish is rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade in North America, there are others that should be considered for both their utility and their beauty.

What Choice Will You Make? | | Banggai Cardinalfish ( Pterapogon kauderni) | When the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) hit the marine aquarium trade in the 1990s, it made quite a splash. It seemed to have everything going for it in terms of an aquarium species. Individual fish that arrived healthy proved easy to care for and hearty, and their bold markings and showy finnage quickly made this fish a marine aquarium favorite. Unfortunately, the popularity of this fish, combined with its limited known range, have pushed wild populations to the point of being threatened. Luckily, due to the ease with which this fish is bred in captivity, a growing number of suppliers of captive bred Banggai are giving conscientious aquarists a chance to own this fantastic fish without negatively impacting the wild population.
